Top 5 Travel Essentials When You Go On A Long Road Trip

by Agustin Rojas | Nov 23 2019

Road trips are just such fun giving you an amazing opportunity to connect with your friends and family while having the time of your life. In fact, even solo trips can be great in case you want to try something new or ‘discover’ yourself.

With the breeze in your hair, a clean smooth road, your favorite music blaring through the speakers—what else could you need! If you answered comfort, you answered correctly.

While road trips may sound all badass, it can soon turn into a not so happy trip if you end up getting back pain or neck pain. Sitting in an uncomfortable position for several hours can have a negative effect on your physical as well as mental health. Not only will you be constantly disturbed with the stiffness in your muscles, but you will also become frustrated. To make your trip a happy one, we have made a list of the top five travel essentials that you need whenever you are going on a long road trip. So, let’s get started!

Travel Essential #1: Comfy Clothing that is Suitable for Long Drives

A long road trip means that you are going to be spending a lot of time, sometimes even days at a stretch, sitting in your car. Now, imagine having to do this while being in your tight-fitting jeans. Doesn’t sound too appealing now, does it?

Always opt for comfortable gear when you are traveling—be it by car, train, or plane. Swap your jeans for comfortable track pants or lycra-based pants, and your tight or form-fitting T-shirts or shirts with something looser and airy. Be careful with the material of the clothing that you choose as well. During summer months, avoid wearing synthetic clothes as they’ll make you sweat a lot. In the case of winters, don’t forget to carry a comfy and soft hoodie for added comfort. Also, ladies please ditch the heels altogether and stick to wearing flats or sneakers. So much better!

Travel Essential #2: A Travel-Friendly and Soft Neck Pillow

If you ask us, neck pillows are such an important invention to ensure overall comfort. Sitting in a place with restricted leg space and uncomfortable seating can put a lot of pressure on your neck. While it is true that some car seats are comfortable, they are not really designed to fully support your back and neck. In such cases, it will be much more helpful for you to buy a neck pillow before your long road trip.

Neck pillows can give you optimal support while you sleep or if you’re simply looking around at the road. There is a wide range of neck pillows available in the market as well. You can always opt for the usual U-shaped pillow or the more newer varieties like the shawl travel pillow or the neck pillow that comes with an arm latch.

Travel Essential #3: A Complete Sleep Kit that Includes Noise-Canceling Ear Plugs and a Sleep Mask

If you’re planning to go on a road trip, make it a point to have either your friends or family tag along with you. Not only will doing this give you the required driving breaks, but you can also refresh your mind by catching a quick nap.

The perfect way to doze off quickly would be to carry a sleep kit with you. A sleep kit should have either noise-canceling headphones or ear plugs along with a sleep mask.

Make sure that the ear plugs in the kit actually do cancel noise. The sleep mask should be a soft material that doesn’t feel scratchy against your skin. While you are at it, do not forget to make sure that the straps of the sleep mask are not too tight around your head. Only when you are fully certain about both these things should you go ahead and place your order for one.

Travel Essential #4: Lots of Snacks and Drinks

It is always a good idea to have some snacks or drinks with you to satisfy those sudden hunger pangs. While it is true that you can always buy some snacks when you are on the road from roadside vendors, or when you stop for gas, it is still better to pack some snacks and drinks before you leave your house.

Make sure to pack enough healthy food, junk food, and aerated drinks to keep you and your co-passengers satisfied. You can also carry coffee or tea if you want. Remember to never drink and drive for your safety and for others. You can also carry a cooler or a snack organizer with you for added convenience.

This option is even better in case you are conscious about your health because let’s face it, while you are on the road, most of your options will be restricted to fast food. A cooler could come in handy as well if you are going for multi-day trips. Also, don’t forget to carry water with you in abundance.

Travel Essential #5: An Emergency Car Kit

This is a very important point that sometimes can be ignored. Every vehicle should have an emergency supply kit, whether it is being taken for long road trips or not. This is just how important they are!

There is a wide range of things that these kits should include. We have listed a few of these below to help you understand better.

  • A properly inflated spare tire
  • Tool kit
  • First Aid Kit
  • Jumper cables
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Duct tape
  • Flashlight along with extra batteries
  • A compass
  • Wheel wrench
  • Tripod jack
  • Car charger for your cell phone

These are just a few things that you should definitely add to your emergency car kit. You can also look for a more detailed checklist of this kit online. Make sure that you are careful with the essentials so as to be prepared at times when there is an emergency. After all, it is better to be safe than sorry.
