General information of parks and reserves in Chile - Isluga Volcano, Vicuñas National Park, Radal 7 Tazas, Orbicular Granite Nature Sanctuary, Fray Jorge Park, La Campana Park
 

Isluga Volcano National Park.

It is located 232 kilometers northeast of Iquique.

Here it is possible to admire volcanoes; high snow capped peaks, lagoons and aboriginal birds like the beautiful flamingoes, the extensive steppes and Andean valleys where it is possible to see llamas and vicuñas, a peculiar Andean camelides.

Its average altitude is 4.000 m.a.s.l. The Aymara man is admirable; who is respectful of his customs and his sticking to his land.

Walking along the excursion paths you will be able to see diverse ecological and vegetal environments, such as the case of Arabilla Lagoon, where one can see fauna such as the Chilean Flamingo. It is also interesting to visit Puchuldiza Geothermal field made up by geysers and hot springs. It is to be noted that the fumaroles are appreciated mainly at the coldest daybreaks of winter when water becomes frozen forming magnificent ice blocks.

Las Vicuñas National Reserve.

It is located 230 kilometers Southeast of Arica.

As it goes by its name, it was created to preserve the vicuñas, the smallest of all the four-non tamable South American camelides. It lives in familiar groups grazing indistinctly on pastures and manure fields. The female bears only one off spring yearly. It was almost exterminated for its hide and wool, which is the thinnest animal hair fiber after that of the silkworm.

Llanos del Challe National Park.

Located 40 kilometers northwest of Huasco.

It was founded as a zone of scientific interest for the mining purposes. It has an area of 45.708 hectares.

Located in an ecological zone of the coast desert.

The object of the park is to protect representative samples of flora and fauna that are not protected by any conservation regulations, for that reason its protection was declared.

Orbicular Granite Nature Sanctuary.

Located 11 kilometers away from Caldera

Some geological outcropping of orbicular granite with round and square encroaches of rookery. They constitute a geological rarity unique in South America.

These formations are compound by hornblende, orthoclase, biotite, quartz and others.

Some pieces are exhibited in the Mineralogical Museum of Copiapo.

Fray Jorge National Park.

It is located 45 kilometers west of Ovalle.

In 1941 it was declared National Park and in 1977 Worldwide Biosphere Reserve. It has interpreting footpaths, an Environmental Information Center, camping and food on the road eating sites.

The best period to visit it is spring.

A wilderness area protected of 9.959 hectares of area.

A place of exuberant vegetation characteristic of Southern Chile, it is besides integrated to the international net reserves of the bio-sphere.

The park has a surface of 43.057 hectares.

The attractions that this park offers are its areas for picnicking as The Arrayancito.

La Campana National Park.

It is located 32 kilometers southeast of Quillota.

Distance: 5 Kilometers away from Olmue

Campana National Park, a great natural and ecological beauty. It was created for the protection of the flora and fauna of this zone, with special interest in the conservation of the Chilean Palm.

This National Park shows since 1977, the category of a National Biosphere Reserve, a qualification awarded by UNESCO since it constitutes a scientific patrimony of the earth.

The most relevant are the "marai", sculpted stone blocks made by the ancient Indians who used them to crush rocks and get minerals, mainly copper. They can be found in Peumos area, Granizo section.

The Chilean palm is outstanding for its vegetation, which lies on the Ocoa section.

Laguna Torca National Park.

Located 108 kilometers west of Curico.

It has an area of 604 hectares.

The flora is formed by diverse species, according to the different sections that form it.

The administration office is 3 kilometers away of Llico population, an environmental information center with picnicking sites.

Radal 7 Tazas National Reserve.

Located on the Andean pre mountain range at an altitude ranging from 600 to 2.156 m.a.s.l., and at 60 kilometers southeast of Molina.

It has an area of 5.147 hectares.

This Reserve is administrated by CONAF, who have implemented footpaths for walking, picnicking areas and a center of visitors.

9 kilometers away from El Radal sector is the English Park that has a hostel.

Altos del Lircay Protection Area.

Located 44 kilometers east of San Clemente. This pre mountain range box is between Claro and Lircay rivers and further to the interior are El Picazo (2.320 meters), Tres Cuernos (1.950 meters) and Peine (2.200 meters) mountains.

The protection area covers an area of 16.884 hectares.

It is characterized by the presence of rivers, esteros, varied landscape beauties, a dense vegetation, natural lagoons and the conditions that offers for the practice of tourism adventure in its diverse forms.

The visiting of Gil de Vilches Park is suggested where one can watch the "Piedras tacitas" a testimony of ancient civilizations that inhabited this zone. Also, the "El Enladrillado" and "Valle del Venado" sectors which can be reached on foot or on horseback. From here one can reach the Descabezado Grande and Descabezado Chico volcanoes.

For board and lodge there is a good hostel in Vilches, cabins and camping sites on temporary run.

Los Bellotos del Melado National Reserve.

Located in the pre mountain range of Linares province.

It has an area of 417 hectares.

In fauna, birds are the most abundant, including the woodpecker, the pitio, the tricahue parrot, and the eagle, fio fio and so on.

The administration office is at the entrance of this area. It does no have picnicking or camping facilities.
