A natural reserve of minerals that has several lagoons with fauna in them. It is
internationally famous among the archeologists for the presence of archeological
deposits.
It comprises the territory of the great arreica depressions-dry lands without
water outlets-located west of the Domeyko range.
It is barren land surrounded by some oasis, enclosed by the Andes range and
snow-covered volcanoes. It is the biggest salt deposit in Chile with a white and
rough surface that hides, to the naked eye, a big salt lake.
It is interesting to visit La Punta, Salada, Barros Negros and Tevinquiche small
lakes, Chaxa lagoon and Tulor village ruins.
Aldea de Tulor (village)
Located at 12 km from San Pedro de Atacama.
Considered the oldest develling vestige of the salar (it dates back from between
800 b.C and 500 a.D.) miraculously conserved by being covered by sand.
Only 10% of the village is uncovered by excavations carried out in 1982.
Valle de la Luna (valley of the moon)
Located at 21 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama.
Declared Santuary of Nature. It is placed in the Range of Salt, formed by a
depression surrounded by mountains with impressive sharp crests.
You can see figures that seem sculptures like Las Tres Marias, and the Anfiteatro.
Baños de Puritana (baths)
Located at 28 km of San Pedro de Atacama.
Baths of warm water that comes out of the rocks. There is an hotel called Explora
Geiseres del Tatio (geysers)
Located at 94 km from San Pedro de Atama.
It is a geo-thermical area linked to the volcanoe Tatio. At down clouds of steam
of up to 6 meters rise up from the ground.
Peine Town
Located at 98 km from San Pedro de Atacama.
It is located at an altitude of 2400 m.s.n.m. It is an oasis in the midst of the Andes.
A town that dates back from the XVII century. The road of the Inca went through
Peine and also Diego de Almagro and Pedro Valdivia went by this place.
