Capital of the region of Magallanes, the city is located on the banks of the
straight of Magallanes on Brunswick peninsula. Anciently called Punta Arenosa, a
literal translation of the English name "Sandy Point" named by J. Byron in the
17th Century. Its climate is of a cold steppe, with an annual average temperature
of 6,5 Celsius.

In the environs of the city one can visit:
The Bulnes Fort and the Starvation Port, are located at 60 Kilometers to the south
of Punta Arenas. Both forts formed the first Spanish colony on the coast of the
Straight of Magallanes.
Currently, The Bulnes Fort is an historic reconstruction of the small fort
where Chile settled the first Patagonian town and took possession of the same.
On the coast remains of old ships that shipwrecked are seen.
The Starvation Port or Puerto de Hambre are on the banks of the coast of
Buena Bay. According to history its inhabitants died by starvation in the attempt
of the Spanish settling. Some years later, the English corsair Thomas Cavendish
arrived in that place and on finding the remains of the ancient colony, re-named
the place "Port Famine".
Isla Magdalena, a redoubt of penguins, cormorants, birds and seals. It
is estimated that the population of penguins is approximately 50.000 couples.
It deserves special mention the Estrecho de Magallanes, an inter-oceanic
channel with a 583 kilometers in length and a width of 3 kilometers in its
narrowest part and between 35 to 40 kilometers in its widest parts. The traverse
as a usage route is of incomparable beauty as it is the marine fauna.
