PAYACHATAS SNOWY

These are formed by the Parinacota and Pomerame Volcanoes, with a height of 6.342 m above sea level, and of 6.282 m above sea level, respectively. The hillsides of both volcanoes have a soft slope of about 45º. This is particularly important for those who like to go mounting climbing, especially during the months of July to September. Temperatures go up to 20ºC, average humidity is 40%, and annual rainfall ranges between 200 and 300 mm.Guided excursions are offered to climb the mountains that usually start in Putre and in Caquena over 4.000 m above sea level. According to legend, both volcanoes represent two lovers that lived an impossible love.

HOW TO GET

ACCESS:

ByLand

From Arica you can arrive directly to Caquena, located at the foothills of Parinacota Volcano (204 km). 176 km are paved and the remaining 28 km are graveled and in only a regular condition.

Journey

From Arica to the North by Route 5, you have to arrive to Lluta roundabout and turn to the east. Take the international road to Bolivia (Ch-11), at km 176, then turn to the north by route A-123, passing through Parinacota; then continue up to km 20 turning to the east towards Caquena.

Transportation

From Arica to Putre, by La Paloma Buses Company. Their bus terminal is located on 301 Baquedano St.
