Tourism in Parinacota
Distance: 36 Kilometers away from Putre
A little town of around 45 inhabitants of pre-Hispanic origins. Its characteristic is the urban structures with a panoramic view towards the snow - capped Payachatas. It is located in an Aymara village within the borders of the Lauca National Park.
It is 4.392 meters high.
It was an important town in times of the colony. It presents several corrals on the surroundings where the mules that carried the freight to Potosí (Bolivia) were kept. The houses are made of stone and clay; the roofs are made of hay.
It is interesting to visit the church of Paricanota that was rebuilt of stone in 1789 (during the 17th century).
Putre (Parinacota capital)
Distance: 140 Kilometers away from Arica
It is located 140 kilometers from Arica in the high plateau (planicie altiplánica), 3.500 meters over the sea level. This is a town of pre-Hispanic origin.
The town was laid out around the year of 1580, in order to shelter the Spaniards in charge of the traffic to Potosí. It is interesting to visit the colonial town and the church that was built in 1670.
An obligated stop is the railway that links Arica and La Paz, an excellent road.
Many houses still conserve the portals elaborated in carved stone in the XVII century, the time of the economic peak in the region.
Putre is considered the starting point to take trips to the Lauca National Park, Parinacota and the Lake of Chungara.
