Tourism in the City of Los Andes

Distance: 80 Kilometers away from Santiago
Main Activity: Tourism

Considered a provincial capital. It is the obligated international traffic route from Argentina that passes through Cristo Redentor which links Chile with Mendoza city. Tourists that come from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay pass this way.

It is interesting to visit San Esteban, an agricultural population located six kilometers away from Los Andes. It is also an important hot spring resort, a resting and natural revitalize place.

· Cuesta de Chacabuco and San Rafael
· Juncal and Blanco Rivers
· Sanctuary of Santa Teresita de los Andes
· The Gabriela Mistral’s House (1912-1918)

The house is situated in the Coquimbito sector at the entry of the city of Los Andes. The Chilean poet Lucila Godoy Alcayaga (winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1945) lived in this house in 1914. She lived in the city of Los Andes for 6 years, and it was here she wrote her famous “Sonetos de la Muerte” (Sonnets of Death).

· Cristo Redentor de los Andes (Christ the Redeemer of Los Andes)

Situated at the summit of the Cordillera de Los Andes, 3,900 meters above sea level, on top of the Paso del Bermejo. It is a beautiful statue symbolizing the peace between Chile and Argentina, although it was erected after the end of the border disagreement of both countries. It was inaugurated on 13 March 1904.


How to get to Los Andes:

By Bus:
Buses leave from the Los Héroes terminal in Santiago. You can also take a bus from Valparaíso to Los Andes – check local bus stations for details.
By Car:
Via the Panamericana Norte Highway
