Juan Fernandez Archipelago
Distance: 587 Kilometers away from Valparaiso
It is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. This archipelago is formed by 3 main islands: Robinson Crusoe, Santa Clara and Alejandro Selkirk; and it is also surrounded by 3 more islands: San Félix, Salas and Gómez and San Ambrosio.
These main islands are settled on a huge rocky mountain; they abruptly emerge from the ocean to the surface of the ocean. The largest island owes its name to a forlorn mariner who arrived there in 1.704 with the Cobija English Corsairs in the Cumberland bay.
The famous writer, Daniel Defoe, took this character as an inspiration to write the novel of the same name.
These islands are marvelous and well known because of their flora and fauna. They have been declared World Patrimony and Bio-sphere Reserves by The UNESCO. Nowadays, they are National Parks.
Its rainy climate allows the growth of the most extraordinary vegetable species, unique in the world, as well as an interesting land and marine fauna apart from several birds in danger of extinction.
The Juan Fernandez Islands are linked to the continent by small ferries and flights of private air companies.
At the present time, people who inhabit the region are devoted to fishing and locust hunting; this last one is very famous because of its taste and unique size.
