Juan Fernandez Archipelago
Distance: 587 Kilometers away from Valparaiso
It is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. This archipelago is formed by
3 main islands called: Robinson Crusoe, Santa Clara and Alejandro Selkirk. Besides
3 more islands called San Félix, Salas and Gómez Islands and San Ambrosio Island.
These main islands are settled on huge Rocky Mountains they abruptly emerge form
the ocean bottom up to the surface of the ocean. The largest island owes its name
to a forlorn mariner on its beaches in 1.704 by the Cobija English Corsairs in
Cumberland bay.
The writer Daniel Defoe inspired himself in the diary of this character to write
the novel of the same name.
These islands are marvelous for their flora and fauna. They have been declared
World Patrimony and Bio-sphere Reserve by UNESCO; nowadays it is the National Park.
Its rainy climate allows the growth of the most extra-ordinary vegetable species,
unique in the world, as well as an interesting land fauna, marine fauna and of
birds almost on the extinction stage.
Juan Fernandez Islands are linked with the continent land by means of small ferries
and the flights of private air companies, which make it a fascinating visit.
At present people that inhabit it are devoted to fishing and hunting of locust,
famous for its taste and its unique size in the world.
