Tourism in the City of Iquique

Distance: 1,853 Kilometers away from Santiago
Main Activity: Tourism, Commerce, Industry and Fishing

A modern city of great commercial prosperity and tourist attractions. It has the largest free zone in South America, besides it has modern hotels, restaurants and casinos.

Among its most important beaches, it is possible to mention: El Aguila, Cavancha, Lobito, Primeras Piedras, Brava, los Verdes and Huayquique.

Out of town, you can visit a great number of sites of beauty and historical importance, like the ancient offices of saltpeter dealing (Santa Laura) Humberstone or the Pica town as well.

The presence of the Rupestrian Art brings back memories of the Tiwanaku Culture, especially thanks to its hieroglyphs called “Atacama Giant”, which are located 84 km to the Northeast of Iquique.

In the Andean Altiplano (High Plateau), there are Aymara and Atacama communities, which still preserve their ancestral customs dedicated to the cultivation of quinoa and the breeding of camelids that live with the flamencos. In the Isluga Volcano National Park, we can see the high snow- capped peaks, the Aimaras’ ceremonial hills, wide plateaus, native vegetation, lagoons, rivers, and wetlands with a rich bird life and awesome geysers.

Tourist Attractions:

· Regional Naval and Anthropological Museum
· The Municipal Theater
· The Astereca Palace
· Tamarugal National Reserve
· Tiliviche British Cementery
· National Park Isluga Volcano
· Lauca National Park
· Humberstone Saltpeter Office
· Zofri

The Oficina Salitrera Santa Laura, located 48 kilometers from Iquique, keeps the remains of  an industrial structure where part of the process of elaboration of saltpeter in the shanks system was carried out.

In the house of Administration, there is an exhibition of a collection of historical objects related to the daily life and chores in the saltpeter mines.

General Information:

Commerce Schedule: From Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 13:00 and 16:00 to 21:00. Saturday: 9:30 to 13:30.
