Coquimbo = “A place of calm waters”
It is located 12 km from La Serena. It is the main place of the region.
It presents houses, made of wood, with a typical urban architecture. This characteristic comes from the old residents who were English and North American carpenters.
It is the most important commercial port of the region, from which, the outing of mineral products (mainly iron) and agricultural is done.
This city is practically linked to La Serena.
Among its most important beaches, it is possible to mention: Totoralillo, Lagunillas, La Herradura, Morrillos, Guanaqueros, Blanca and Tongoy, and the bay of Guayacan.

· San Pedro Church (1862)
It is situated in the Aldunate Street, Nº 999, close to the corner of Lastra. This church dates from 1862, this site was the earliest parish of the city; it was founded in 1857, so it was a witness of the creation of the city of Coquimbo.

Situated 2 km from Coquimbo and 14 km south of La Serena, this is a former fishing bay and copper foundry. Actually it is an attractive tourist resort with camping areas, a yacht club, hotels, cabins and other tourist services.
The year 1578 the English pirate Francis Drake discovered the Bahía de La Herradura (Horseshoe Bay), named for its shape. From that moment on, the bay served as a refuge for pirates and buccaneers like Bartholomew Sharp, Edward Davis, George Anson and others of lesser notoriety.
La Herradura is remarkable for its calm sea, appropriate for swimming and water sports. Its waters are warm.
With an extension of 2 km long and 40 m wide. It is appropriate for swimming and water sports such as windsurfing and diving.
At one side of the beach is located Puerto de Guayacán, which has a fully mechanized wharf. In your visit, you can go to see the church and the Club de Yates.
Many gulls and pelicans give life to this place. The great sand extension in the beach gives an atmosphere of tranquility and absolute beauty in which a clean air is breathed and is enjoyed an exquisite marine breeze.
At any time of the year always there will be tourists in this place, since it has a privileged climate and tranquility in winter which allows relaxed long walks by the beach and turns to this bath a very good choice to know.
How to get to Coquimbo
By Boat
The access by boat is restricted to the international cruises that arrive at the port.
By Bus
There are many departures from La Serena to Coquimbo. From Santiago, there are departures every day. You can consult in the Terminal.
By Car
Coming from the north or south, you should take the Route 5 towards Coquimbo or La Serena. From Copiapó, there are 344 km. and from Iquique, there are 1,397 km. From Santiago, there are 462 km. and from Los Vilos, there are 231 km.
By Airplane
You should travel to la Florida Airport from La Serena and take some transport towards Coquimbo. Other alternatives are taxis and public locomotion.
