Coihaique was founded in 1929 in order to support the urban settlers. It is the capital of the Eleventh region.
A region with a geographical, botanical and zoological variety is formed by a great number of islands covered with heavy vegetation. The rainfall is permanent (3,800 millimeters annually in some places).
It is a continental zone crossed by immense traversing valleys, abundant rivers and the major Andean glaziers whose ice forms were shaped thousands of years ago. In this region, there are still some territories that have not been explored yet.

Puerto Chacabuco. This is an active and prospering port. It is a ferry terminal and a port for big ships.
The Hotel Loberia del Sur is situated here. There are different boats that travel to the San Rafael lagoon.
Puerto Aisén. It is considered the leader port of the insular territory. It contains all basic services, accommodations and restaurants.
Balmaceda. It is located near Argentina. It has become the first town of Aisen. It has an international airport and the customs office of Paso Huemules.
Lago General Carrera. It is located 280 kilometers from the city of Coihaique (98 kilometers paved). This is a deep blue lake with a unique landscape.
The closer shore to Argentina is flat (it is the beginning of the Pampa that goes to the Atlantic). In Chile Chico and Puerto Ibañea, its Chilean part, the mountains present round shapes without vegetation, a result of the glaciers erosion.
Cochrane. This is the Capital of the province and the latest town crossed by the Southern Road. It is considered the center of air services.
It is interesting to visit: del Baker River and Fall, Campo de Hielo Norte ice field and O`Higgins village.
Caleta Tortel. This is a small town that is located next to the Baker River, the largest river of Chile. It is situated in an estuary of fiords and channels, between Campo de Hielo Norte and South (north and south respectively).
It is interesting to visit: Ventisquero Jorge Montt and de los Muertos Island.
