This city is located 86 kilometers from Caldera. It is the Capital of the province.

A city of great commercial and tourist activity, and considered an important resting point. The traffic of passengers to this zone is important.

· Barquitos Port
This small port was founded in 1916 by The Andes Coppers Mining Company. The construction concept contemplated a thermoelectrically base, a wharf and a railway line. In 1917, the structure was finished; the wharf and the thermoelectrically plant initiated functions in 1927. This port finalized its work on September 9, 1981.
The Loberías de Barquitos can also be visited. This place is located about 4 km. to the south of Chañaral, there, marine wolves rest and it is possible to observe them from various viewpoints.

How to Get to Chañaral

Chañaral is located about 972 km to the north of Santiago, 499 km from La Serena and 165 km from Copiapo. You can get there by:

By Bus: From the surrounding towns and Copiapo, there are a lot of daily departures. You can consult at the bus terminal.
By Car: From the north or south of Chile, you should travel through the Route 5 to Copiapo, from this city, you can take the route to the coast towards Caldera and Bahia Inglesa. 165 km more and you will be in Chañaral.
By Plane: It is possible to arrive to The Copiapo Airport from any city of Chile. From there, you should traverse 165 km in vehicle.
