It is placed in the region of the province of Chiloe. It is the oldest city of Isla Grande in Chiloe. The main commercial activities are fishing and agriculture.
Castro comprises the central area of the big island of Chiloe and the islands of Quinchao and Lemuy too.
Castro is the third oldest city of Chile, after Santiago and La Serena. It is considered the capital of the province of Chiloe.
The most part of its inhabitants live in houses whose architecture is based on water. Another characteristic of the city is the customary festival, in which, all the popular costumes are reflected.

Dalcahue. It is located 19 kilometers away from Castro, it is important because of its communications with the Isla Grande de Chiloe and the Isla de Quinchao. Such communication link is done by boats and ferries that traverse the Dalcahue Channel. Its rocky coasts present an impressive abundance of mollusks and crustaceans, which are a special attraction for seafood lovers.
Chonchi. It is located 23 kilometers away from Castro. The town is also known as "the city of the three floors". Its constructions are based on cypress wood. The gastronomy is varied and it is very famous thanks to its golden liqueur and ring-shaped doughnuts. The festivity of the Virgin of La Candelaria is very popular.
Quemchi. It is located 75 kilometers away from Castro. It presents different tourist attractions and a rich craftsmanship, especially, in knitting and miniature.
Isla Lemuy. This island is surrounded by channels and archipelagoes; it contains beautiful beaches, typical towns and channels.
