4 Luxury Holiday Destinations You Can Actually Afford

by Agustin Rojas | Jul 3 2019

No matter where in the world you are from, the thought of jetting off to another destination and enjoying their culture is always appealing. Whether it’s a cocktail-fueled holiday in Spain, a walking tour trip to Berlin or an action-packed hiking or skiing holiday – we all work hard to save up for traveling.

When money is tight, some of us turn to settling for 3* self-catering resorts in the Canaries, while some of us will stick to camping and caravan breaks. However, it is more possible than you think to indulge in a little luxury, for less money than you think.

Below are 4 locations which can give you the slice of extravagance without breaking the bank.

A Safari Trip in Cape Town, South Africa

For many travelers, being bundled in the back of a safari jeep with lots of other tourists gazing out at cheetahs may be the most unique holiday experience they get.

A safari trip is something you’ll find the royals and the rich do. There is just something about sitting around a campfire spotted wild elephants shuffling by that just seem unattainable to everyone else. Surely, for a safari trip which gives an experience so raw and unique, it must cost the Earth.

This is where many people are wrong. During the low season in South Africa, which spans from May – September, the weather is cooler which puts people off traveling. However, not only will you find the price of your South Africa safari holiday is a lot cheaper, but the low season happens to be the most ideal time to witness some of the most unique wildlife you wouldn’t get to see during high season.

Elounda, Crete

When you look online at photos taken from Elounda in Crete, only the most prestigious hotels and surroundings show up. From first glance, you would assume this is a playground for the rich. Either that or those who have won big on win big on lottery gambling or have won a luxury trip.

Although this is how it looks, remember that it is no secret that Crete as an Island makes a pretty cheap holiday destination.

Elounda sits on the East side of Crete, which was once was an old, tranquil fishing village. Now, its play home to some of the most fascinating 5* hotels across the island, set in hillsides overlooking stunning scenery.

When it comes to pricing up week-long holidays to Elounda, you will be pleasantly surprised at what you can get for your money. Think lavish, premium accommodation which comes in just slightly higher than the typical Greek island prices. Definitely more bang for your buck.

Lake District, UK

The good old United Kingdom has its own slice of extravagance, providing the perfect typical British break surrounded by countryside and scenic views. The Lake District is situated to the north of the UK and is popular for boasting natural beauty with some of the very best mountain climbs, country pubs hiking trails and serene lakes.

You don’t have to stay in one the 5* lakeside country hotels to explore the Lake District. There are hundreds of family ran B&B’s which provide budget accommodation and discounts if there is a large group of you. You can even get great deals when it comes to renting out a cottage.

New York

It’s true when they say New York is one of the most expensive cities in the US. But did you know it is filled with cheap or free sightseeing excursions, ferry trips, and budget accommodation?

There are many ways to experience New York without being flush. If you research in advance, you can get tickets to Broadway shows with 50% off, and lots of cheap eateries bundled together in areas such as Brooklyn or China Town.

It doesn’t cost you anything to explore Macy’s and wander around the cosmopolitan shopping districts and browse the trendy cocktail bars. Just be careful not to bring a credit card in case temptation arrives!

If there are other places on your bucket list you wish to travel to on a budget, don’t forget to look at sites such as Airbnb. You would be surprised at how much you can save on accommodation, without sacrificing location.

Give yourself plenty of time to research free activities and sightseeing experiences which don’t cost the Earth. Do this and you can guarantee a holiday experience just as good as those who splash the cash!
